WHY:
This race gives us several angles that are worth keeping in mind when analysing Class 3 1400m races:
- If a horse is beaten a long way in a recent run purely because it was forced to travel three wide without cover, that race should not be used when calculating its Advantage Rating. In this race, YUEN LONG ELITE raced three wide twice. If we had included those runs in the calculation, we would have ended up with a rating that underestimated its true ability and even placed it below THE ABSOLUTE and THE BOOM BOX. That would clearly misread the horse’s trip and the overall race shape.
- On paper, BRILLIANT EXPRESS had very solid credentials: it had previously beaten both YUEN LONG ELITE and THE BOOM BOX, yet still failed to deliver this time. This scenario is very similar to TOP DRAGON in race 2024-800, and may reflect a common pattern with a last‑start winner: once the horse is hit with a weight hike and draws an outside gate, the connections’ attacking intent can drop, making it less suitable as the key horse in our staking plan despite its apparent form.
- Edge Analysis involving Class 4 races can still capture a horse’s genuine ability. In this race, the calculated score for YUEN LONG ELITE, THE BOOM BOX, THE ABSOLUTE and NEW FUTURE FOLKS were all derived using their Class 4 opposition as reference. In particular, YUEN LONG ELITE clearly scored higher than THE BOOM BOX, which is very encouraging: it shows that even if a horse has never finished outside the top three since debut, the algorithm will not blindly overrate it. Instead, it evaluates the form through the lens of class, race shape and trip, rather than just raw finishing positions.
